Be Pet Prepared For A Disaster

Current Shots: Dogs - Rabies, DA2PPC and Bordetella. Cats-Rabies and 4 in 1 (RHCP)

ID Tags: Custom tags with owner name and phone number are best. License tag is essential.

Collar/Leash Harness: Not only secures animal but is needed for tags. Also provide a leash.

Micro-chip: A great tool should the animals collar/tag be lost or come off

Carrier: Use plastic, wood or wire. Cardboard carriers may not be secure. Use permanent marker and mark the outside of the carrier with the Pet's name, breed, ID tag and license number, your name and two phone numbers.

Medication: Place meds and instructions in a water tight, pet-proof container.

Water: Have a liter or quart size container of water.

Food: Pack the same kind of food you regularly feed your pet. Dry - place in zip-lock bags to keep dry. Moist- be sure you have flip-top lids for easy opening.

Bowls: Have 2 bowls, one for water and one for food.

Blankets: Put in a plastic bag to insure they are kept dry- used for sleeping/covering carrier.

Towel: Put in a plastic bag to insure it is kept dry - used for drying wet pet

DOGS: Add baggies to use for "poop" pick up. CATS: Add 1 gallon zip-lock baggies. Pour cat litter (about half full) and seal. To use, shake litter to the bottom of the bag and roll back the opening for use. Simply reseal when ready to dispose of litter.

All above items should be stored in the carrier until needed. Be sure to have a carrier which will allow the pet to move around along with the emergency supplies. If this is not possible, place the emergency items in a canvas bag and tie it to the handle of the carrier. In a major disaster, pets may have to be housed in their carrier for a few days.

Make prior arrangements with a friend, neighbor, or family member to secure your pets for you when disaster strikes and you are away, i.e. working, vacation, etc.

REMEMBER, our pets will be more frightened than we are at the time of a disaster. It is up to us to help them feel secure and comfortable during these times.
